My New Piano – Yamaha DGX 650

It’s been a rough year on many levels so I decided I needed a present to congratulate myself for getting this far. After searching through quite a few pianos and seeing what they had to offer, I settled on the Yamaha DGX 650. It sounds and plays close to a real wooden Yamaha Grand (my mother has one that I love to play. But mine won’t need to be tuned.

I have quite a few recordings online of improvised piano music, but this instrument will allow me to record 6 tracks. 540 voices. I’m excited! My current piano, a Techics P30 is more than 15 years old and it’s starting to go. Technics went out of business and you can’t get parts for it. There is still life left in it, though, even though corrosion is starting on the motherboard, so I’m giving it to one of my students. A 17 year old boy I’ve taught for the last 1 1/2 years. He’s saving for a new keyboard and only has a crappy old 61 key Casio that was probably purchased at Kmart a long time ago. This one has 88 kkeys. He’s happy!

Soooo. . . Be on the lookout for new music!

  1. IS THE “PIECE”, THE PROPER WORD FOR EVERY DIFFERENT SONG YOU PLAY? I LISTENED TO A FEW MORE;”MORNING PAIN” (HOPE THAT’S RIGHT), IS BREATHTAKING. I ENVY PEOPLE WHO CAN CREATE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC. I’M PLAN ON LISTENING TO ALL OF THEM.

    1. Yes, I think to call each one a “piece” would be right. Thank you for listening. My old piano I used only one “voice” – a straight piano sound. My new one was 545 voices. 10 piano sounds, 10 electric piano and every other sound you could think of. I can layer sounds on top of each other. Right now I’m just playing with it to see what it can do. It’s awesome

    1. When I play I don’t think. I feel. Most people who should be close to but aren’t – like my sisters and their grown children have never even heard me play yet have passed judgement on me as having little value. I put that into my playing – that emotion. I was playing yesterday and just sat and cried at what it pulled out of me. I’ll be recording again soon. When I was a child I wanted to play the most beautiful music ever written but I didn’t have the capabilities then or the confidence to let go. I thing I’ll go play now. Thank you.

    1. I’ve been learning the functions. It has awesome sounds. Unfortunately I don’t play ragtime but my son is awesome with boogie woogie. I play what I call dream music meant more. to affect you emotionally. I don’t gig anymore. I just write and teach.

  2. Have not responded for quite a bit so thought i should. Hope your surgery went OK. I used to have a Yamaha keyboard until earlier this year I gave it to Dave (Juanita’s husband). I messed around with the different sounds the keyboard could make but I preferred my bass guitar to play. Still have the Crate amplifier, not the guitar. But I’m tempted to do it again.
Very involved with the Christmas Tree Shop that have little time to do else other than visiting with Janet Thomas.
I hope to get writing going again BUT ned to stop the small projects taking up my time. You know how that is. A supposed small project will take a day or week away.
    Hang in there!

    1. Good to hear from you! Glad you’re busy with your life. Sometimes music has a way of making things better – releasing stress and making me feel good. It’s been a hell of a year hasn’t it? Patty would be so happy for you!
